Arron Wood vows to divert heavy vehicles from City Road
Lord Mayoral candidate Arron Wood today announced that if he is elected in October, he will call for the Department of Transport and Planning and Transurban to divert heavy vehicles from City Road through the Domain and Burnley tunnels.
This follows a long running campaign from Southbank residents, transport experts and animal activists calling for a significant reduction in heavy vehicles, to be redirected away from City Road and onto CityLink to improve the safety, amenity and overall liveability of residents.
“City Road is one of Melbourne’s busiest thoroughfares, and the constant noise from heavy vehicles, such as cattle trucks, is a major concern for those living and working in the area. By rerouting these trucks through the center lane of Domain and Burnley tunnels, we can significantly reduce the noise and improve the overall amenity of South,” said Wood.
“This is not just about making Southbank quieter and more liveable – it’s also about ensuring the safety of motorists, truck drivers and livestock being transported and making the journey more efficient for the road transport industry.”
Wood referenced the alarming incident in July 2024, where a cattle truck collided with a bridge in South Yarra, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly two dozen cattle. “This heartbreaking event highlighted the dangers of transporting livestock through inner-city routes with low-clearance bridges. By using the Domain and Burnley tunnels, with some controls on the type and method of loads carried, we can help prevent such incidents from happening ever again by using the centre lane of the tunnels which have adequate height allowance for livestock.”
In addition to this solution, Wood committed to working with the Victorian State Government in line with the Victorian Freight Plan to explore alternative means of transportation such as rail for heavy goods. “Residents and business owners in the City of Melbourne deserve a forward-thinking approach to transport, one that prioritises public safety, amenity and animal welfare. Where possible, rail reduces emissions and is a safer option that should be part of our long-term strategy while still meeting the needs of freight customers.”
Wood’s recommendation is supported by CEO of the Victorian Transport Association, Peter Anderson. “The VTA supports Arron Wood’s proposal to redirect heavy vehicles away from City Road and through the Domain and Burnley tunnels. We believe that it will enhance safety for our drivers and other road users, while also making it easier for heavy vehicles to travel through the CBD,” said Anderson.
“If elected as Lord Mayor, I will always prioritise the well-being of Melbourne’s residents and visitors. This solution works for everyone – reducing noise in Southbank, preventing accidents and ensuring safety for drivers and their freight. It is time to change the way we approach heavy vehicle transport in our city,” said Wood.
