Speaking at the Future Forte International Students Lord Mayoral Debate, Independent lord mayoral candidate and small business owner Arron Wood has thrown his support behind Melbourne’s international students and will fight for the abolition of damaging caps on numbers.
Mr Wood said international students played a critical role in Melbourne’s economy and cultural fabric and more needed to be done to support students and encourage more to make Melbourne their home.
“International students are absolutely critical to making Melbourne the city we all love,” Mr Wood said.
“The Federal Government’s caps on numbers for international students attending universities in Melbourne is really damaging and we need to call it out and get them to listen.”
“I’ll always fight for what’s best for Melbourne – whether that’s taking a strong stand in Spring Street or in Canberra.”
Mr Wood said international students also played a critical role in providing a skilled workforce for many city businesses.
“We know how important it is for so many City of Melbourne businesses to get the right staff they need to succeed and international students are absolutely critical for so many businesses,” Mr Wood said.
“I’ll be working tirelessly with businesses in the City of Melbourne to continue advocating on their behalf and for the thousands of international students in Melbourne and the thousands more who want to come here.
